Secretary Peter wanted to keep in touch with e-Kiwanis Bayside members while travelling away from his Queensland home in 2008. Euroka Station, north east of Conargo NSW, did not have suitable internet or mobile phone facilities available. Using a USB broadband connection, Peter was able to make a connection, with the help of a boost to reception provided by the wire netting surrounding the Euroka homestead tennis court. This demonstrates one of the advantages enjoyed by Kiwanis Internet Club members. They are able to 'attend' Kiwanis meetings in spite of geographic or mobility limitations they face that would ordinarily exclude them from joining a Service Club.
FAQ’s about the Kiwanis Internet Club of Bayside?
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Our motto is "Serving the Children of the World"
Kiwanis International is a service organization that supports children and young adults around the world. Kiwanis was founded in 1915 and is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Kiwanis members in over 8,400 clubs around the world provide millions of hours of community service each year.
Club service projects often are linked to the Kiwanis program, "Young Children: Priority One." Other service projects help the elderly, promote literacy, support youth sports, and support specific persons in need. Worldwide, the entire Kiwanis family is committed to eliminating the devastating effects of maternal/neo-natal tetanus, the preventable cause of 60,000 deaths in children and 30,000 deaths in mothers each year around the world.
Kiwanis is divided into districts, and each district is divided into divisions. We are in the Australia District in Division 6. The special service project for our district is Heartkids. Every year Kiwanians throughout the district raise thousands of dollars for research and other support projects to minimise the effects of childhood heart disorders, the leading cause of death of children in Australia. International and District officers provide support to club officers. Also, the Division, District, and International levels sponsor events such as dinners and conventions where we can meet and share ideas with other Kiwanians from all over the world!
In addition, Kiwanis plays a special role in developing future generations of leaders by sponsoring reading programs, and the reward based programs, Terrific Kids, and Bring Up Grades (BUG), in primary schools.
How is e-Kiwanis Bayside different from traditional Kiwanis clubs?
All club business for e-Kiwanis Bayside is completed via the internet: through email lists, and our website. No regular meetings are held at a particular location; they are held using Skype 'Chat', a reliable secure and FREE program downloaded from the WWW, so you can join in from any computer! Other than that, e-Kiwanis Bayside is exactly the same as traditional clubs - dedicated to service.
No minimum attendance at projects, meetings, or events is required of a member. That's the beauty! You decide when you want to participate and what you want to do according to your schedule. Meetings are for fun, to inform, and to decide what to do next, so you'll want to join in as many ‘chats’ as you can. Sign up only for the projects you want to do and have time for. The only commitment we ask is that you show up when you sign up to assist another community group, or find someone to go in your place so we don't let the charity organizations down when they are counting on our help. If you'd like to take on some more responsibility, there are positions available in the club and committees to take part in for more fun! We encourage every member to be on at least one committee to help shape the group. Committees meet only when required to plan projects or other management tasks via a chat room, or in-person if you are part of a local grouping of members.
How much email should I expect?
Typically, a few email messages a week. Generally these are reminders of upcoming events and chats and then recaps/minutes of those events and chats. If you sign up for events or join a committee, you should expect a few additional email messages each week.
What are the computer requirements?
An email address
A Web-browser with cookies enabled and javascript. Our members use a number of MS-Dos operating systems and some enlightened members use a Mac.
Where and when are service projects and social events held?
We schedule a variety of service projects throughout the year and plan a social when circumstances permit. Some projects and events will occur on weeknights and some on weekends. Some will be held in the city and others in the suburbs. We attempt to provide a variety of events, times, and locations to accommodate everyone's schedules. We encourage you to help coordinate a project or event in a location or at a time convenient for you!
